After months of anticipation, the Greeley West Spring Musical has finally been announced. We will be performing Hadestown, the teen edition! As a thespian at Greeley West, I am extremely excited to be performing this drama in the spring.
The Spring Musical has been kept a secret since last school year, keeping us guessing throughout the summer and our fall show, Chicago. Each thespian, primarily the underclassmen, were committed to being the first to figure it out, even though we all knew our director, Peggy Freemole, wouldn’t break.
Students were doing in depth research on the tiniest hints Freemole would intentionally push our way and even on the hints that we probably imagined and blew way out of proportion. There were guesses of Wicked, Beetlejuice, Dear Evan Hansen, Anastasia, Frozen, and actually Hadestown, of course that was pure luck.
One of the biggest hints was when Freemole insisted that we go see Hadestown when it came to the Lincoln Center in Fort Collins. A lot of our thespians attended the Broadway Tour and were completely blown away by the production. Unlike some of the people who went, I was not familiar with the music or the plot, so everything took me by surprise. I was actually so obsessed with the show, I did everything I could to go again the next night.
Hadestown is a folk opera, which is a musical form of drama, making use of scenery, acting, and a blend of poetry and dance. Although we will be performing the teen edition, it will still be a huge challenge considering the style of the show. This group of thespians has also never performed with a live orchestra, which is an essential part of this show.
I know it will be challenging, but I am certain that we have the talent and dedication to produce a successful show.
