At Greeley West High School, the student involvement is lacking in several areas. Over the years, school events like sports games aren’t as important anymore other than West-Central games. Additionally, inside the school with assemblies getting lazier and less hype with every little pep assemblies throughout the year. Plus there are only two school dances exist (Homecoming and Prom) with very little attendance for both.
When the school year begins the first home football has hopes for high attendance for a great beginning of the season. When the time comes, a good amount of people show up for a preview for the rest of the season, but after the first loss people lose hope and don’t hardly ever show up for the rest, excluding West-Central week. Other than just football, no one shows up to any other sporting events. The lack of spirit, the lack of involvement needs to be figured out because if it starts to worsen even more than it is right now, nobody will want to show up to any events.
Inside the school, the assemblies and events such as the school dances are just simply lacking in any energy or effort to bring people in or make people excited to be in school. Starting with the assemblies, from my freshman year to senior year a clear decline in effort and spirit is shown, and it is seen in the students as well. The energy has lessened, from all classes knowing their class chants and actually saying them to barely saying them at all because no one wants to be involved or doesn’t feel involved. Especially when we only have a few assemblies in the year for spirit. If we had experienced more other than the sports assemblies, West-Central or Homecoming the involvement in the student body wouldn’t be as lackluster as it is right now.
Moving forward to school dances, not many kids show up to Homecoming and Prom as you would think. Just the past two years, Homecoming and Prom attendance haven’t been necessarily high, and rushed to be made. This year, the Homecoming dance had the theme of “Clue” the board game. This theme had mixed feelings throughout the student body. Coming to Homecoming day for the dance, the dance was first held in the aux gym a small area limiting space compared to the past year it being held in the commons. Presenting the whole dance as rushed or a bad execution leading to not a high attendance. Then Prom earlier this year, it was in a smaller room, and again it had a lower attendance than expected. An additional dance like a Winter Formal could boost involvement for students. It’s in the middle of the year between the two dances, Prom and Homecoming, it allows another chance for people to be involved and want to do something. Especially for the underclassmen who aren’t able to attend Prom, it gives them another chance to take anyone to a dance.
