During the first week of November, the holiday Dia de los Muertos occurred for the Hispanic community. Greeley West High school’s LULAC and Medical Club put up an ofrenda in the Student Center at the University of Northern Colorado.
The point of the ofrenda was to hold remembrance for the five construction workers who had passed away during the bridge accident in Maryland. Additionally, the students also wanted to dedicate it to the farm workers and immigrants who have died in pursuit of the American Dream. More importantly to help those who don’t celebrate the holiday become more acculturated and learn more about the misinterpretations of minorities.
Junior Kevin Ibarra Ruiz feels that the traditions that come within the culture are beautiful and would like if people knew more. “I would really like for more people to learn about the culture because traditions like this are very beautiful, both in the way that decorations are put up, and how much it brings people together,” Ibarra Ruiz stated.
Each student celebrates this holiday to have more time with those who have passed by putting out items that the people have enjoyed, but overall just to celebrate their lives. Senior Briana Chairez spoke that she puts up an altar for her loved ones that passed away to celebrate their lives. She does this by putting out items that they enjoyed so she can spend more time with them. “I put up an ofrenda to allow my loved ones to visit me,” Chairez said. “I am given the chance to spend more time with my loved ones who have passed.”
