Over the past couple of years, more and more Greeley West clubs and organizations have taken to social media to reach students and the community. The most commonly used platform has been Instagram, due to its popularity. They use this as an information source to output things going on around the school and to keep people informed. This has been useful to a student body because of the information they are receiving on a platform they use a lot. The most common and popular accounts have been Yearbook and Student Council. They not only use Instagram but they also make fun TikTok videos. They use these not only for their own organization but to sponsor and post what’s going on around the school.
Junior Cody Gesick is the Communication Liaison for Student Council at West. He believes that social media is a powerful tool and it helps keep everyone informed. “We can just as easily connect students, parents, staff, and the broader community through our school’s social media. And it’s definitely proven effective,” Gesick stated.
Social media has been very beneficial when it comes to helping this organization reach the community. “On Instagram, our posts reach our followers, who then repost them, allowing their followers—many of whom likely attend West—to see the information. In no time, we’ve spread important upcoming events or updates to a large portion of our school community,” Gesick said.
Gesick also believes, “Aocial media is an excellent way to showcase student achievements and highlight school programs, which I hope helps build a strong, positive reputation for Greeley West High School.”
Yearbook has had a good reputation as well. Junior Aliyah Reyna has helped manage their social media and even helped create a TikTok for the program. “I like having the information so I can help give others a heads up and keep students informed,” Reyna stated.
She feels as though getting out on social media boosts not only the yearbook but the school as a whole. “It’s fun when you blow up and you have others from different schools commenting and messaging us. It not only helps us, but also our school and it gives others an opportunity,” Reyna said.
According to Gesick not only did social media help them advertise but it’s also helped support our schools in meaningful ways. “Creating these connections fosters a sense of belonging and collaboration. Thanks to our social media presence and school announcements, we were able to organize an event that engaged many students who don’t typically participate in our recent dodgeball tournament,” Gesick stated.
“When we are promoting not only our school but also other organizations it strengthens the community feeling. It helps spread information about school events and initiatives from other clubs and organizations while also reflecting Student Council’s commitment to the broader community,” Gesick said.
When it came to the tournament he enjoyed the partnership it built. “For example, after the dodgeball tournament, we promoted the Weld Food Bank. I hope this partnership can lead to more future events, allowing us to continue supporting both our school and the community in meaningful ways,” Gesick said
