The senior College Composition class, a UNC Dual Enrollment class taught by Mr. Garrett Leal, mainly focuses on structure and language in a logical format for writing. As the school year approaches its end, the students are wrapping up their essays about discourse communities. The students have very mixed reviews about this class and its requirements.
Some students are having trouble with it, and some even had to redo it several times. Senior Ermiyas Tesfaselasse said, “I have kind of struggled with the essay having to restart quite a bit. With the essay prompt being so open to interpretation and not explicit it’s hard to write something that follows the rubric/prompt and something I find interest in.”
On the other hand, some students are on top of it with their essays. Senior Madison Vella said, “This essay has been really easy for me. I was on top of all my work and finished before Thanksgiving Break. Leal makes me feel confident in my writing while also helping me improve it.”
Senior Nancy Vega agreed with Vella and Tesfaselasse saying, “ Although I wouldn’t consider myself a great writer, I have liked this class. This is especially because most of our writing is on topics of our choosing. Throughout the process, the essay was okay despite it being a bit tough to find good reliable sources and connect our subcultures to “John Swales” eight criteria of a “discourse community.”
