Many students at Greeley West have multiple talents ranging from athletics, and academics to performing arts. Sophomore Elliot Leffler is one of those students. He is involved in golf, baseball, theater, choir, and yearbook. However this busy student has gotten the chance to further his choir and music career.
Last November, West’s choir was introduced to the ‘Melody Contest,’ where a director from the University of Northern Colorado came into their class and had everyone compose a four-measure melody. This contest was presented to most schools in District 6.
Leffler, thinking nothing of it, composed a melody, liked it, and added more. In about two class periods he had a fully formed piece and turned it in to Ms. Rosie O’Conner, West’s choir director. He forgot about this piece for awhile thinking it was nothing big.
“After I turned in my piece, I had no idea when I would hear back, or IF I would ever hear back from the composer, Dylan Fixmer. I just thought it was a one-and-done thing where I turned it in and went on with everyday life,” Leffler said.
Then early January, everything changed for this student. Leffler was called up to the front in class, again, not expecting much and told he won the contest. “I wasn’t sure how to feel because it was semi-awkward but also really cool to know I won,” he stated.
On March 8th, Leffler’s music will be preformed at 7 p.m. at the UCCC by the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra. Students and staff are all encouraged to show up and support. Tickets will be discounted.
