Many students work very closely with animals at Greeley West High School. However, some of these students have furthered their work with animals outside of school. Senior and vice president of West’s FFA chapter Anastasia Rodriguez gets this opportunity every day at her job.
This all started her junior year when she applied for a District 6 Summer Internship. “I originally started over the summer as a Boarding Intern and then I was accepted into the VCA program which was partnered with West Ridge which is a veterinarian office,” Rodriguez said.
Her usual shift is pretty straightforward. But on some days it can be a little hectic, “Most of what I do is slower and spent caring for hospitalized patients or assisting with exams/vaccinations.”
She went on to say “Some days can be crazy and I could be found assisting the doctors with anything I can do; restrain, taking basic vitals, comforting the patient, etc.”
Rodriguez thinks this has been a great way to jump into her plans, “This internship is allowing me to get my Certificate to be a Veterinary Assistant, which will allow me to work at a vet clinic while I am at school,” Rodriguez said.
She went on to talk about the doors this internship will open for her when she goes to apply for school. “On top of that, this internship can set me apart from other vet school applicants, as I would already have experience working with animals in a vet clinic,” she added.
