As the only female golfer at Greeley West High School, senior Grace Gerbers is able to hold up high standards for herself. But she is also part of a District 6 team at Northridge and has learned to balance the pressure of joining together with other girls from different schools and play together as one team.
Gerbers i currently ranked 2nd in the conference, which has raised her competitor’s focus against her. She has placed in the Top 5 in almost every competition of the season and is working her way up to 1st place.
Working hard on yourself as a player can bring a lot of achievements and changes to how you play. Some things that Gerners has achieved is better placing in her scores from the past two years but also making sure to fix and change her swing. “I’ve made a lot of changes to my swings and a lot of changes to my scores and been able to learn a lot mentally,” Gerbers said.
For girls golf coach AJ Johnson, it’s been empowering to work with such a high level competitor. He said his focus is to help her harness all of her abilities and to make minor adjustments. Every year, Johnson has seen Gerbers better her stroke average. “Over the past three years, she has improved her stroke average by about 10 strokes every year and is on pace to become a really good golfer,” Johnson said.
As Gerbers continues to represent the Spartans, she is starting to not only play the game but change it too. Whether it could be inspiring other high schoolers to play golf or even younger kids to join the golf team, it’s making a change to the sport and showing the gender doesn’t matter on the success you can have in one sport.
