The cheer team at Greeley West is looking for new athletes. Tryouts are being held on Tuesday through Friday in the main gym.
Greeley West cheerleaders have numerous performances, games, competitions, fundraisers, community events, pee wee clinics and community service that they do all season long.
Senior cheerleader Mariana Enriquez has been on the team for three years and is helping her coach hold tryouts this year. She mentioned that there are no skills or experience required because they are really searching for people eager to learn. “We really look for the type of attitude they have towards things,” Enriquez said.
Cheer coach Brodie Subia said, “I look for coachable kids, a person who can be a leader in our school and in the community, a person with a good social media presence and of course someone willing to improve each and every day they are with us at tryouts or during the season.”
Along with their willingness to learn, Subia looks for good and present students. “Grades are a cheerleader’s first job here at Greeley West, always have been and always will be,” Subia said.
Enriquez knows how important it is to have good grades while being on the team. In cheer, every athlete is needed to be able to execute stunts, formations, and choreography successfully. It becomes very inconvenient when someone is ineligible.
The tryouts can be intense for people with less experience. Subia pushes the athletes physically to see if they can handle the season once they get their uniforms in August. It is important to note that these uniforms are earned over the summer by mastering skills and passing 2 physical/written tests in the fall prior to their first game/match.
The cheer team at Greeley West is a great opportunity to meet new friends, to be a role model for the school, and to learn new skills like time management, communication, and commitment.
“We’re not looking for necessarily the best team at first, but definitely the RIGHT TEAM,” Subia said.
