Dance team tryouts were held last week, offering students a chance to join one of the most energetic and visible groups at the school. Whether you’re an experienced dancer or simply passionate about performing, tryouts were open to anyone ready to commit and work hard.
Tryouts were held over the course of four days. No formal dance training was required, so long as dancers brought energy, focus, and willingness to learn. “I’ve done a lot of auditions for dancing, so I know how to prepare myself, and I’m really good at picking up choreography,” said freshman dancer Alyxses Guillan, who made the team.
The dance team performs at school events, pep rallies, games, and local competitions throughout the year. Being a part of the team means building lifelong friendships, gaining confidence, and representing your school with pride. Junior dancer (soon to be senior) Camden Cooney said to “make sure you’re being kind to others and motivating to others because your personality really does matter.”
During the tryout, participants learned a short routine that included elements of jazz, hip-hop, and pom.
Head Coach Marissa Gardner emphasized that being part of the dance team requires dedication and a strong work ethic. “We are looking for confidence. If they know that they have room to grow, that tells me as an athlete that they’re willing to work hard and put in a lot of effort,” Coach Gardner said.
The goal this year is for the West dance team to make it to Nationals in Florida, no exception. “We are going to compete at the highest level, so we are going to start right away with choreography at camp this summer, and prep all through football season,” said Gardner.
Curuious on who made the team? 12 dancers made the team and itt has been announced on the dance team’s Instagram page.
