Temple Grandin is someone who made history in the meat industry and made multiple contributions to the meat industry to help build better opportunities for better meat quality and safety for animals and humans.
Temple Grandin was born August 29, 1947 in Boston, Massachusetts. Grandin was diagnosed with autism in 1950. Though she was born with autism this did not allow herself to be put at a disadvantage and pursued her academic success no matter what people would think of her. She was most known for her revolutionary proposals to help improve the cattle-handling systems.
With her inventions she has severely impacted the meat industry with creating more humane treatment of livestock and having better meat quality based on lower stress levels with cattle. This goes to show that autism is not something that can hold you back with having dreams of success and seeing future builds and success that others might not see.
With the success and revolutionary impact that Temple Grandin had, a moving and inspirational movie was made after her and her innovations revolutionizing and practices for the humane handling of livestock on cattle ranches and slaughterhouses, starring Claire Danes and Temple Grandin.
This movie not only is inspirational but it is also motivating to help inspire people that may be born with different abilities than others but shouldn’t have to stop you from creating and chasing after your dreams. This movie alone shows determination and the impact of embracing Neurodiversity.
Now Temple Grandin is teaching at Colorado State University on a course of livestock behavior and facility design. She has been teaching since 1990 and still teaches there to this day in 2025. Her courses focus on animal welfare and humane treatment of livestock. Additionally she has authored over 60 scientific papers on animal behavior.
