The Greeley West football team played their first regular season football game against last year’s state runner up’s Roosevelt Roughriders on Friday, September 2nd.

After months of preparation and countless hours in the weight room and on the practice field, the Spartans pulled through with a 35-11 victory, giving them their third-straight opening game win in the past three years. Senior, Darren DeLaCroix had a game to remember, with all five of his team’s touchdowns and 243 all-purpose yards. When asked about his performance he replied by saying, “The team played well as a whole, which in turn made my job more than easy.”

Greeley West’s offensive line seemed to be more than prepared for the battle in the trenches’ Friday night. With only two of the five starting offensive lineman being seniors, they looked more than up for the task after Friday night’s game.

Aside from the Spartans offense, the Roosevelt Roughriders looked to have no answer for the dominance the Spartans showed on defense. The Spartans, had 29 total tackles, along with one sack and one interception. Alex Valverde provided the Spartan defense with the interception, which set off the offense to pull away with the victory.

The Greeley West Spartans face the Longmont Trojans on Thursday night at Longmont. Coming into the game with a six year losing streak against the Trojans, the Spartans look to impose their dominance as the top team in the 4A Longs Peak League.
