As love starts to fill the air at Greeley West High School, so do the flowers and treats. As Valentine’s Day approaches right around the corner, students and staff start to prepare for the Greeley West’s tradition of selling flowers and treats to give out to the students, staff and community.
This tradition is a way to help raise funds for school activities/sports in celebration of Valentine’s Day and the love that is given to family and friends. One of these traditions is our Horticulture and Floriculture classes creating flower bouquets to give out to family and friends.
Horticulture and Floriculture are working together to create all the orders to give out to the family and friends that they belong to. This also helps bring students real world design and experience in floral design, marketing and business operations. “It encourages students with teamwork, leadership, and communication as they interact with customers and manager orders,” Agriculture teacher Samantha Pierce said.
Greeley West’s Floriculture students have started preparing for the flower bouquets that need to be made. This helps bring excitement to the classroom and builds up leadership skills for students. “I am promoting Ms. Pierce’s flower arrangements and encouraging students to buy the flowers we made as a class,” denior Callie Tyran mentioned.
While students create floral designs, one major role is being able to market these sales and getting them out to friends, families and businesses. This helps build a healthy environment with students in class and learning from each other and how different people work with flowers.
It’s important for students to get an understanding of marketing. One of the assignments that students were given for these Valentine’s Day sales was to send out five emails to families and friends and five emails to any Greeley businesses. Though this might not be the most exciting part for students, it is a great opportunity to understand a portion of what the field of marketing is like.
While marketing its important for students to have set goals for themselves, like how many flowers they are wanting to sell to families, students, or the Greeley community. Students are showing a great example of that with promoting the valentines day sale. “My goals are to sell six different arrangements to family and friends,” senior Jaclyn Pellegrini said.
