Tennis team battles weather, opponents at Regionals

The Greeley West boys tennis team traveled to Cheery Creek High School to compete in this season’s Regional Tournament. The Spartans sent eleven players to compete for a spot at this year’s state tournament.

After the first day, three doubles teams and two individuals were eliminated. No. 2 singles, Garret Fink, and No. 2 doubles, Stuart Hopwood and David Orozco, qualified for the second day of the tournament with two wins over their opponents.

The second day was postponed until today due to a down pour of rain. The sun came out and Spartan payers, along with other competitors, worked for about an hour and half squeegeeing off all of the big water puddles hoping that the sun would dry the rest. A little less than ten minutes after they finished working on the courts, a second wave of rain hit confirming the postponing to Friday.

Fink will be able at maximum to finish third with one victory over Columbine’s player today.  The doubles team is awaiting the final score of a lower seeded match that will determine whether or not they will need to play another match for first or second place.
