Soccer team awaits playoff matchup after beating Central

The Greeley West boys soccer team came out and stunned the Greeley Central Wildcats 2-1 on Tuesday. Even though everyone had them as the underdogs and the Wildcats were favored to win, they did not play like it. It was a hard fought game between the two best teams in Greeley and some of the best players around the town. But Tuesday night it was the Spartans’ night from the beginning. It was their senior night and everyone wanted one last win against the Wildcats.

It was a fast paced game from the first whistle with both goalies making some spectacular saves. The Spartans were able to capitalize first though with junior Luis Ramos making a goal midway through the first half. From there, the Spartans never slowed down. They went into the half with a 1-0 lead because of a stellar defensive effort and a huge save from senior goalie Brandon Valladeres in the closing minutes of the half.

As the second half got going, the Spartans did not let up at all. They kept the pressure on the Wildcats’ defense and had them on their heels. Then Luis Ramos scored again early on in the second half. It was an amazing goal and effort overall by him. It was clear that he would win the Andy Borg MVP and that is what he did. The Wildcats struck a penalty kick late in 80th minute but that would be all they could get the rest of the game because the Spartans were too much to handle for them.

Senior Samuel Guillen said, “It was a great experience and I will miss all the boys and we were glad we could end the year right and get one last win against our biggest rivals.” The boys are 8-7 after their loss to Fairview and will find out who they play in the first round of the playoffs this weekend.
