Greeley West senior Diego Ruis senior was nominated by the counseling department for a $10,000 scholarship from the Rotary Club of Greeley.

Ruis was introduced to Rotary in middle school.  “Rotary has been a part of my life since 7th grade. I went to all their leadership conferences such a RYLA and Young RYLA,” Ruis said.

Ruis is one of two students each high school will pick over the course of the school year.  Those finalists will be interviewed and compete for the scholarship by Rotary Club members.

Rotary’s main mission is that what you do as an individual can  help impact the community and community service. Ruis stated, ”RYLA is like my second family, and the cool thing about Rotary is that you are surrounded by other leaders who also want to help the community and be a better individual.”

Ruis is also involved in Interact, FBLA, Link Crew, and DECA.

The nomination came as a surprise to Ruis.  “First I did not know there was a scholarship for Rotary until I got nominated,” Ruis said.  “There are no criteria – you don’t have to have perfect grades or community service – but you do have to have something that identifies the idea that your putting others before yourself.”

Ruis had also been chosen to be student of the month.
