Soccer season celebrates successful season

It was an amazing run for the Greeley West boys soccer team as they had made the 5A playoffs for the first time in 14 years. But their great season came to an end last Thursday when they fell to the number 11 ranked Rangeview Raiders in the first round of the state playoffs. It was a spectacular run for the Spartans and one that will be remembered for years to come.

The Spartans were hoping to continue their speedy offense and their great attack even without leading scorer, junior Luis Ramos, who had to sit out due to suspension. But they have faced adversity all season long because of injuries and eligibility issues. They had overcome everyone’s expectations already and it was just another bump in the road for the boys to get over.

Once the game got started you could tell the Spartans were flat and not themselves. As they gave up two goals early in the first half, they gave up another quick two goals at the end of the first half as well to go down 4-0. Most of Rangeview’s goals came from sloppy passes and turnovers. When the second half got started the Raider’s struck again to make it 5-0. The Spartans finally got on the board late in the first half by a goal from Sadam Mohamud. That was all they would get, falling 5-1.

It was a great turnaround for the Greeley West Spartans as they started 3-5 on the year and then eventually making the  playoffs. Senior Cesar Barrera said,” It sucks that we are out but we exceeded everyone’s expectations and turned non-believers into believers. I am proud of this team and will miss everyone.”
