Girls swim team hangs tough against Monarch

The Greeley West girls swim team had never defeated Monarch before, and after Monday’s results, they still haven’t. However, this is the first year in a long time that the girls swim team finally put up a good fight against the Coyotes.

The West swim team won six events including the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 breaststroke, 500 freestyle, and 100 backstroke. Monarch won only 5 events, but due to multiple second and third placements, they earned more points with a total of 94 points to West’s 76. Coach Mr. Colin Shaha said the girls team has not swum the medley relay that fast in over a decade.

Greeley West junior Emily Cook prevailed at this past meet, getting her fastest time; taking off five seconds on the 100 freestyle. “This season is already going really good and everyone is trying really hard to get their best times,” explained Cook. “It felt really good getting cheered on by my teammates and coach.”

Cook believes a lot more people are committed this season and will be one of the best years the girls swim team has had for many years.
