Sophomore helps West overcome slow second-half start in victory over Central

The Greeley West boys basketball team took on the cross-town rival Greeley Central Saturday night. The game was packed and very intense, as expected.  As time clicked down on the game clock, the Spartans came out on top and defeated the Wildcats with a score of 58-50, improving their record to 9-6 overall.

Sophomore Tommy Gonzales won the Tom Boyle Award as the MVP for the game. “Getting the MVP felt great, it’s my first ever and I just want to thank my teammates, they helped me out a lot and I’m very thankful for that,” Gonzales said.

Obviously the game was close throughout, but West helped keep it close by being on its heels to start the second half.  “I think we started out pretty good in the first half, but then we did come out pretty slow at the end of halftime but then we also came together and found a way to finish it out,” Gonzales said.

The West-Central rivalry continued to live on with another packed house for the game. West plays two home games this week.  Next up will be Boulder on Tuesday night.  Then, the boys host Fossil Ridge on Friday night.   Both games are league games, where West is currently 2-2 in league play.
