West staff battle flooding after thunderstorm

Last night, Colorado got hit by a huge thunderstorm that caused an insane amount of rain and hail to be poured upon towns. Greeley West surprisingly got out of the storm with very little damage done to the school.

The school was held together pretty well despite having a 50+ year old school. The ceiling only leaked in three spots in the 400 hall, and one location in the 500 hall. The worst flooding came from the 500 hall and rooms 508, 510, and 609. The downhill slant from the south parking lot made the water head towards the school. The water got through the doors and made its way to about half the classrooms. There was no damage but the carpet was extremely wet and had puddles. This led to a very bad smell from the carpet being wet, but no actual damage. No other classrooms were affected.

Building managers Denise Tellez and Scott Simonds had to do most of the cleaning. There were three people working on cleaning it all up for about an hour and a half the night of the storm from about 6 to 7:30. Simonds cleaned the 500 hallway while the other two cleaned the classrooms. The hallway was taken care of by using an auto scrubber and mopping up everything else. The classrooms were cleaned by using two machines called extractors. Since these people worked hard and got everything done that needed to be done, classrooms had no damage and the classroom schedule remained the same.

Tellez, said, “It’s all cleaned now, just a little bit of a bad smell. My co-workers and I had to put the rooms back together this morning since the desks had to be moved from cleaning. I was surprised that the water just came from the doors and not the ceiling.”
