For the second year in a row, the Greeley West Spartan softball team has dominated and won the Berthoud tournament. On Friday September 8, the Spartan softball team headed out to compete in the annual tournament held in Berthoud. This is now the second year the Spartans have won this tournament, although this year came a lot easier for the team.

The Spartans ended up 3-1 in the tournament. Despite the loss to Mead, the Spartan girls found a way to come together and find a way to get three big wins. The three wins came very easy to West. The Spartans ended up beating Weld Central in the championship with a score of 10-0.

Senior Mykalie Teets stated, “It’s always fun to come out and win a tournament away from home.”

The Spartan softball team has struggled the past couple years, but this year there is hope for a new start. The Spartans are young and ready to work. With only two seniors on the varsity team, they lack experience but have a group of young athletes ready to turn the program around.

This year the Spartans are 4-5 and are about to start league play. Being in the 5A Front Range league means tough completion, which means that the Spartans need to play their best softball that they are capable of playing to make a playoff spot.

“We’re really young, but the girls that are young have played a lot,” Teets said.
