Pressure’s off Fagan as he heads to state golf tournament

On Monday September 18, junior golfer Connor Fagan qualified for state. West has not had a state qualifier in golf for two years and Fagan is looking to make a run at winning it all. Fagan and the coaches will travel to Aurora in Denver on October 2 and 3.

There were four regional tournaments where 21 players from each region got the chance to move on and golf at state. That is 84 players to make it to state that Fagan will be competing against. Fagan placed 12 at regionals out of the 59 players there. Fagan shot an 81 which was 9 shots over par, and it safely secured him a place at state. The score that won the regional was a 71 by Regis Jesuit golfer, Calvin McCoy.

Connor Fagan was asked about the regional and what mindset he needed to get him to state “ I knew going in that the cut line was going to be somewhere around 80 and this whole year I have been right around there, so I knew it was highly manageable,” Fagan said. “I started off pretty good and was even through tree, but then I had two straight double bogeys and finished my first nine holes 7 over par and I knew that I had to play the next 9 holes near perfect, and I did.”

Fagan said that the competition he sees will be some of the best he’s ever competed against.  “It will be really cool to go up against some of the top guys in the state who will eventually be playing college golf,” Fagan said. “Now the pressure is off and I can just go out and have a good time and play up to par.”
