On Wednesday, the senior class defended its title in the annual Tough Guy Volleyball game.

Seniors, Delaynie McPhee, Peyton Whittaker, Shelby Rae, Anna Whyrick, and Madison Homan coached the senior boys, and juniors, Hailey Ortega, Dafnee Flores, and Taylor Webb coached the junior boys.

For most seniors, including Lake Sands and Spencer Evans, it was their first time doing Tough Guy volleyball. “It was really fun to be able to do it this year, but we would be lying if we said it was a  challenge to beat the juniors,” Evans stated.

On Friday night and Saturday morning, the seniors had practice scheduled by the coaches that lasted for about two hours each. The juniors met at the FunPlex on Sunday morning for practice. Sands said, “The practices didn’t last very long which was good for people’s schedules. We mainly scrimmaged the first half of both practices, then ran drills that the actual volleyball players do in a game.”

The juniors won the first match and the seniors took the last two matches ending up winning the game 2-1. “We kept it a close game to keep it interesting, but we knew we were going to come out on top,” Sands stated.

The class of 2019 and 2020 will face off next year to continue the Tough Guy tradition at West.  The game is a fundraiser for Prom put on by the junior class.
