Wrestlers hope for big things

Wrestling season is back and the Spartans are hopeful for another good season. As the new season is about to start the Spartans are realizing their great potential for another great season.

For many sports, the offseason is a big part of how the regular season turns out and the Greeley West wrestling team put in a lot of work. Over the summer and fall, the Spartans would lift and participate in wrestling tournaments to get more experience under their belt.

The Greeley West varsity team has a lot of returning varsity grapplers with a couple new additions to the team. Junior Ty Starks will be wrestling for the first time in a Spartan singlet and will be a huge help to the Spartans’ heavyweight wrestlers, said senior Dion Velasquez.

Velasquez is now on his third year of varsity wrestling and looks to make his mark.

“This year I hope to compete in our tough league and find a way to make a push for state,” Velasquez stated.

Greeley Central is one of the top wrestling teams in the state and the Spartans have had a couple rough outings against the Wildcats in the past years. Velasquez said that hopefully West will pull out some big wins against Central.
