The boys’ basketball team is off to a fast start having played four games in the past week. On November 30, they kicked off their season in Scottsbluff, Nebraska in the Western Conference Tournament.

The Spartans won their first game in the tournament against Gering High School with a score of 69-60. The Spartans were led by junior guard Andre Sepeda who recorded 33 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 7 steals. “It was a just the way to start off the season with a win to see what we were made of as a team,” said Sepeda.

After the win in the first game of the tournament, West faced off against former Colorado 3A State Champion Sterling and lost that game 59-42.  After losing to Sterling, West was playing for third place in the tournament against Sydney. The Spartans lost the third place game 68-49. The Spartans finished the tournament with one win and two losses and placed fourth.

Junior Andre Sepeda found value in the tournament, even with just one win. “ I feel like we had a lot of good things to take away from the tournament. I mean we lost two games but we can learn from what we did wrong in all the games and use that to make sure that it doesn’t continue to happen and that we fix it,” Sepeda said. “We have a good team but we just got to be clicking on all cylinders and then we will be fine.”

After returning from the tournament, the Spartans had a game against Wheat Ridge on Tuesday. It was a low scoring, defensive battle.  In the the end, the Spartan came away with the win, 56-49. West improved to 2-2 on the season. The Spartans next contest is on Saturday against Windsor.
