Track team is impressive in first meet of season

The Greeley West track team had its first meet Thursday at the Greeley City Championship at District 6 Stadium. The Spartans won three events overall at the meet. Megan Battleson, Maria Geesaman, and Michael Delarosa were able to take first in their events.

Delarosa won the 400 meter run with a time of 53.04 which was two seconds faster than the next finisher. Delarosa was also very successful in his 100 meter race running a :11.88. This got him fourth place at the meet.

Battleson won the long jump with a jump of 15’ 5.50”.  Battleson was also very successful in the 200 meter run with a time of 28.49 which earned her second at this meet. Battleson was also able to finish sixth place in the 300 hurdle.

Geesaman took first in her 3200 meter run with a time of 12:19.2, which dominated this event.

West also had many top 10 and top 5 finishers at this meet. The girls had two third place finishers in the 100 meter with the same times.  There was also another fourth place finish in the 200 meter. In the 800 meter, the Spartans were able to get a second place finisher for girls. In the shot put, the Spartans had five girls finish top 10 in a very close competition and four more girls in the discus.

Aside from Delarosa in the 100 and 400, the Spartans had three more top ten finishers in both of those events. For men’s shot put West had two top ten finishers.

Junior DJ Starks, who took sixth place at his first track meet, stated, “I really enjoyed my first meet. I’m going to continue getting faster and do better at meets. I think I’m capable of more and I’ll plcae higher. I would love to be able to make state this year so I’m pushing for that.”
