On Thursday April 5, two Greeley West baseball players made their commitment to play baseball at the collegiate level official. Seniors Luis DeLeon and Cedric Corrales both signed to play baseball next year at Taft College in Taft, California, which is 45 minutes outside of Bakersfield.

Corrales is a four-year varsity player at Greeley West and has pitched, played third base, and has designated hit for the Spartans. In those four years, he has totaled an ERA of 4.40, over 103 innings pitched and approximately 94 strikeouts with his opponents hitting .291 total off Corrales.

Corrales was asked what it meant to him to be able to have the opportunity to continue playing the game at the collegiate level. “It means a lot knowing that all the hard work pays off, but this is really an awesome feeling to be able to pursue the thing that I love the most, I made my family proud and I made my teammates proud and there isn’t anything more I could ask for,” Corrales said.

DeLeon has played on the Spartans varsity team for three years and pitches and plays outfield. In his three years of varsity play, DeLeon has hit a respectable .290 with 27 hits in 93 at bats. Added to that is 17 RBI and two home runs. When he has pitched, Luis has struck out 46 and held the opponents’ batting average to .266.

“It means so much to me. It is about not only baseball, but also the fact that I am the first person to ever go to college in my family. It’s just an indescribable feeling and has most definitely brought some tears,” DeLeon said.
