State is a huge accomplishment for anyone who competes while doing what they love. Over the weekend, seven student got the chance to travel to Denver for three days and experience state for FCCLA, Family Career and Community Leaders of America. All competitors participated in interior design, cake design or community service.

Juniors Joel Rodriguez and Levette Sanchez both competed for the best cake design. Over the course of two weeks, Rodriguez and Sanchez worked after school and on weekends to perfect their cake. The day of competition, Rodriguez and Sanchez completed the cakes in front of a panel of judges while being asked questions about the cake making process. Sanchez won silver placing second. Rodriguez came up close to Sanchez placing third. Rodriguez said, “I never thought I’d make it to state for cake making, but I had making the cake with my friends and teacher.”

A little closer to home, Michelle Lopez and Gabriel Franco completed a community service project for West students. Over winter break, Lopez and Franco made a meal a day for five students at West who were at possible risk for hunger and delivered the meal personally. At state, they presented their community service project and received a silver medal.
