Math Club shows off computing skills as state champions

Greeley West High School found a new way to compete in the past month. Jackson Starkey, a senior at Greeley West, decided he wanted to create a math club this year so he did. This club was a huge success.

The Spartan’s Math Club went to the Purple Comet Math Meet to compete at the state level. The Spartan’s ended up winning this meet and taking first in state in their first year competing. Starkey also competed in a solo competition and got third in that competition.

At the competition, the team sat together in a scheduled room. Ms. Jane Burke was there with them to monitor them. They had a set amount of time to complete as many problems as they could. As a team the Spartans got a score of 11/30.

Antonio Graham stated, “The questions looked simple enough at first, but when you actually start solving it you realize how difficult and puzzling they may be.”

“Being a part of this group was amazing and I learned a lot from being in it. I am really looking forward to next year as well,” Graham continued.

The math club included members who were president Starkey, vice president Katie Gorsline, Jana Sherif, Daniella Hirsch, and Antonio Graham.

The math club met every Friday at lunch to practice. At the practices they would do practice problem that Starkey could find.
Next year Sherif, Hirsch, and Graham will all co-lead the math club. To join the math club all you have to do is show up to the meetings (and know a thing or two about math).
