To become a state finalist in tennis all you need is one good day at the regional tournament. Last season Greeley West had two teams represented at the 4A State Tournament. This season the Spartans sent two teams down to Pueblo for the 2018 state tournament.

After countless practices this past summer Delaynie McPhee, Jana Sherif, and Hana Cropper were on a mission to make it to state for the second year in a row. Cropper moved up to the No. 2 singles position and Sherif joined McPhee at the No. 1 doubles position.

Both teams ended up losing in the first round at state. At the doubles position, the duo lost 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 against Mullen and at the singles position Cropper lost 1-6 1-6 to a play from Niwot.

Despite losing in the first round these three girls were dominant this year. Cropper ended her senior regular season with a 10-6 record and McPhee and Sherif ended the regular season with a 14-5 record.

To make it to the state tournament you have to place first or second in your regional tournament. When the regional tournament came around the Spartans, had already secured a first round bye from their dominant regular season.

Cropper made state via a playback match against Loveland after losing in the finals. Cropper ended up beating Loveland 6-1, 6-2 clinching her spot in the state tournament.

McPhee and Sherif’s road to state was a lot smoother. They beat Windsor in a close match and didn’t need a playback.
