Senior Whyrick places 7th in state discus competition

The 5A State Track meet started this week and Greeley West had a few competitors. Greeley West has been very strong in their girl’s shot put and discus all year.

In the prelims, the Spartans’ had two discus throwers finish in the top 20. Senior Anna Whyrick made the top 10, taking eighth place. Out of a total of six throws, Whyrick’s best score was a 119’-03”.

Whyrick had been chasing the school record for discus all year which was set by K. Yates in 1982. Whyrick fell short of this record as the record was 125’-0”. Lauren Whyrick was the other Spartan to finish in the top 20. She finished 17th with a 101’-03”.

As of Thursday afternoon, the Spartans held onto the 21st place as a team in the state. The finals will take place on May 18 and May 19. The Spartans will also have finishers in the girls shot put, which will be held Saturday.
