As new building moves into planning stages, Spartans have wish list for amenities

With the passing of bond measure 4C, students and staff at Greeley West High School know there will be a new school opening in the future.  As District 6 begins the planning phase of the project, it’s time for Spartans young and old to start making their wish lists for the new building.

Many students and staff have been awaiting the remodel of the school for years and years. With a new school on the horizon, staff and students describe what a new school should have. Sophomore Jazable Breazeale describes what she would like in the new Greeley West. “I think if we had a lot more windows and much bigger classrooms that would help a lot.”

Breazeale was very excited when she heard about the passing of 4C on this year’s ballot. “I was really happy that the next generations will have a good place to go to school and have a better overall learning environment.”

Most students will not be affected by the building of a new school because they will have graduated before it is complete. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors will all have graduated by the time the school will be completed, but many of them have younger siblings  so they still look forward to seeing what West will have to offer. Junior Tanner Elder sees a bright future for the students of Greeley West. “I look forward to the community created by a new school combined with the workspace we will have to create a new atmosphere,” Edler said.

Elder has frequently had problems with the current layout of the school. He has been on crutches and had a brace on his leg and has trouble moving through the school in the past. “Wider hallways would help with passing period a lot. Also I personally as a band geek would love to see the new performing centers like a new auditorium but also new gyms and training facilities as well,” Elder added.

In addition to students, teachers and staff are very excited about the new school as well. Mr. Colin Shaha, an English teacher has a big wish for the new school: “I would like to have a swimming pool for the swim team. I would also love to see more windows in the school,” Shaha said.

Shaha enjoys the Greeley West as it is and feels like a new school might change the atmosphere of Greeley West. “I’m happy that 4C passed, but I think we will lose some of the uniqueness that is West. The crowdedness and having people on top of each other creates a family like atmosphere that I’m afraid we’ll lose.”

Teachers, regardless of the subject they teach, are very excited for what a new Greeley West can bring. Mr. Cody Jiru, a history teacher and a football coach, has one big (maybe too big) wish for the new school. “I would like square classrooms with lots of windows and hopefully smaller class sizes. In a dream world, having an indoor practice facility would benefit all sports such as football, soccer and baseball,” Jirus said.

Jiru was very passionate about needing certain things in the new school like windows. He was also glad to see that 4C passed. “I was relieved to see that it had passed. I’m glad that the people of Greeley and Evans are willing to support our schools and especially the students,” Jiru said.
