Student Council is made up of two groups: the Executive Board and Class Representatives. Monday night, Student Council voted for their Executive Board positions for the 2023-2024 school year. The idea behind executive board is for student council members to elect their own leaders for council.

Class Representatives will be voted on in early February. Student Council advisor, Ms. Lea Sanford is hoping to have 10 class representatives per grade level.

New student council President Zanayah Shanks was excited that her peers deemed her worth to lead the council. “I ran for president to create a welcoming environment at West,” Shanks said,  “I am trying to make a positive but fun change in the school.”

With Student Council now being a class instead of a club, members of the council have seen a dramatic change in their planning of school events. Newly elected student council Vice President Makai Mireles said, “Meeting at least twice a week has been really helpful time-wise as we used to only meet on Tuesdays for 45 minutes.”

The new Student Council executive board positions for the upcoming year include

President: Shanks, VP: Mireles, Secretary: Jacob Nichols, Communications Liaison: Gavin Peterson, Treasurer: Reymundo Ocampo Flores, Sergeant of Arms: Diana Kudu.

Student Council members will be going to Denver this summer to participate in a Student Leadership Conference organized by CHSAA.  It will be the second year in a row that the executive board will make the trip.
