The Greeley West basketball team has their second game coming up tomorrow against Boulder after dropping their first game and home opener of the season to Berthoud, 75-47.
In their first game the Spartans only had four scorers the whole game with three of them combining for 45 of their 47 points. Senior guard River Ortiz scored 20 points on four 3- point field goals. Senior power forward Jacob Flores was their second highest scoring player with 13 points with three 3-point field goals.
Jacob Flores explained what needs to happen offensively in order to improve against Boulder. “We obviously need shots to fall. We need to communicate and run our sets. There is always a method behind the madness… We just don’t really believe yet, we need to buy in and have way more movement around the court,” Flores said.
Berthoud came out firing, outscoring the Spartans in the first quarter, the third quarter and the fourth quarter, 59-27 with the Spartans only winning the second quarter 20-16. The Spartans also allowed nine scorers, with their highest scorer having 25 points on the night. Senior Center Dominic Flores expressed what he thinks the team needs to do differently defensively going forward. “We need to box out and hustle more. Communicate a lot more on defense, and stop getting too high on our set, and protect the rim with no backdoor cuts,” Dominic said.
Boulder will be playing their first game against the Spartans. Last year the Spartans lost to 67-43 after allowing three scorers in the double digits. Senior Andrew Zepeda expressed his thoughts on how the loss against Berthoud will help them against Boulder. “What we messed up on, we can fix up in practice and we will be able to fix it better and so that would be a leg up and we need to execute,” Zepeda said.
