Playing college football is a dream for many high school players. But for senior David Lopez, it is a reality. The captain, linebacker, running back, and tight end has committed to Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska, for football.
It takes years of hard work, sacrifice, and dedication to be able to play football at the next level. Lopez was a standout player on West’s football team leading in all purpose yards, tackles, and touchdowns. Lopez has played football since he was 8 and he explained what the opportunity at the next level means to him. In particular, he was excited to complete high school without a major injury.
“This opportunity is a blessing knowing I’m healthy enough to play the sport I love for a few more years. I’m truly humbled knowing some athletes’ careers are cut short because of injuries,” Lopez explained.
Lopez said football did not come easy for him as he had to face adversity. He said part of that adversity was growing up in Greeley as an African-American “Growing up, it was hard to look different than the other kids…It was nerve racking having to grow up a little faster than others to chase my dream,” Lopez said
Lopez explained that he wants to accomplish great things for the Hastings Broncos as an athlete, but that his college diploma will be his major focus. “I hope to gain more leadership and wisdom from new coaches and new teammates,” Lopez explained. “But most importantly, I want to earn my degree. Football is my life but all of our careers end one day and I want to land on my feet when mine does”
Hastings Head Coach Matt Franzen explained what attracted him to recruit Lopez on the field of play. “He moves very well for a big man – it is rare that a big guy like this can carry the ball like he did in high school and his athleticism really stood out…It felt like a very good fit with our school and program,” Franzen explained.
Franzen also explained how Lopez will fit on the team. “Our plan is to play David on the defensive side of the ball. We are intrigued with the possibility of David playing on the defensive edge, potentially as a defensive end in our 3-4 scheme. He has the size and athleticism that we feel can really stand out and make a significant impact,” Franzen said.
It has been a long road for Lopez in his recruitment process. He explained that there have been sacrifices he had to make in order to accomplish his dream of college football. “A lot of friends. And some close ties I had with people,” Lopez said. “I’m busy a lot. With school, football, work, all throughout the year. It’s just hard to keep friendships while living a busy lifestyle.”
