There is always something fun to get involved in when it includes Greeley West High School. There are many ways to show your creativity and put yourself out there even if it’s something small. Poetry is a great way to do something small and put effort into it. A poetry competition is happening.
Greeley West teacher Ms. Melody Armstrong at GWHS has been very encouraging to students in participating and helping when needed. The winner of the poetry contest will receive 100 dollars as a prize and the poem can be as personal as you want it or even just something random. Many students have taken interest in this contest and are really putting effort as poetry is a way to express themselves.
The poetry contest is called the Robert W. King Competition and it’s for any high school student and includes other high school students. Every year, there’s usually a Greeley West student taking one of the top three spots. Armstrong has been encouraging students in her poetry classes to go further in depth with poetry. “The competition is fun and gets you to express emotions and helps with kids who may be shy they usually stand out in poetry which helps them get loose,” Armstrong said.
The great thing about this contest is that you don’t need to be in a poetry class to participate and its open to anyone.
Students who have gotten involved in it have nothing but good things and reasonings for joining. Greeley West student Percilla Castillo, a junior, decided to enter the contest and has had a good time preparing and submitting her final drafts. “Poetry allows me to talk about things without feeling I am being judged,” Castillo said.
This has allowed her to open up and do something with this kind of art and makes her feel free and careless. The results should be announced at the end of April or in early May.
