During the AVID Matriculation on Wednesday night, three juniors were selected to receive the annual AVID Legacy Scholarship.
The winners joined a short but successful list of Legacy Scholarship winners, but they all also received $500 to start off their college fund. All the money awarded to the recipients was generated through donations from ACE Hardware store customers.
A group of AVID seniors looked over every application anonymously and had to make the tough decision of picking the best three applications that were submitted.
Scholarship committee member and senior Ernesto Villanueva needed help picking just three applications. “Surprisingly, the choice was tough. There were so many essays that stood out, and it took many discussions to come down to three,” stated Villanueva. “Everyone had amazing applications and almost everyone stood out.”
Juniors Lucyna Herrera Pacheco, Isabella Clark, and Sulema Alvarado were the juniors who stood out most to the selection committee.
Every recipient was extremely excited to have won the scholarship. The three recipients were all overcome with emotion. None of them thought for sure that they had won the scholarship, but all were very grateful to have filled out, and won the scholarship.
Lucyna Herrera-Pacheco was overcome with joy upon hearing her name be announced. “I worked so hard on the essay and the whole application, and hearing my name be announced was so exciting. I really wanted to win this scholarship, and I am so proud of myself that I actually won,” Herrera-Pacheco stated. “I’m so thankful to have been selected as one of the Legacy Scholarship recipients.”
