Beyond academics and athletics, some Greeley West students are very involved in their communities. Junior Alexandria Tacoronte just started running her own non-profit organization alongside the many clubs she is involved in.
This organization is called Youth 4 Accessible Communities. The goal is to make the Greeley/Evans community more accessible to everyone by educating youth about inequities and finding solutions to fix them.
“Students are going to be in charge of our world soon so it’s important that we find a passion for improving our community, whether that’s through this organization or just by being open-minded and inclusive,” said Tacoronte.
Tacoronte came up with the idea because of her brother, who experiences frustration due to accessibility issues around the city. She said, “I started this non-profit for personal reasons. My brother has been in a wheelchair for two years now, so I have been exposed to the many inequities regarding accessibility in our community. I’m hoping my non-profit can help combat this.”
One of her first tasks is to help with snow removal during the winter months. Tacoronte hopes students and faculty can help support her and this program by shoveling some problem locations around the city. “I encourage students to sign up to help our snow removal service for community service hours.”
Tacoronte hosted a fundraiser on Wednesday at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop to raise funds for the new program. Students and staff should continue to pay attention to it, as, “many other fundraising events are to come,” Tacoronte said. “We would love it if staff and students showed up to support us.”
