Every year, once the snow starts, it never fails that you’ll hear a ton of “its too cold”, “I need summer back”, “its dark too early” and more from students and families all over. Yes, some of these are true, like let’s be honest, nobody wants to clean off their car early in the morning or drive in awful weather. But, winter could use some more appreciation. Evidently, it is the most beautiful time of the year according to Justin Bieber (cue my favorite holiday song).
Winter even with the cold weather, in my opinion, is the season that is the warmest. Between fireplaces, cozy blankets and pajamas, fuzzy socks and the unspoken agreement that comfort comes before fashion (although they can go hand in hand), there’s truly nothing better.
A great example of the warmth of this season is Hot Cocoa, which automatically, to me, makes this season elite. There is truly nothing better than wrapping your hand around a warm cup or mug as you watch the snow from inside. Add some marshmallows, a fun Christmas movie, your favorite Christmas pajama set and a fireplace (whether on your TV or a real one) and suddenly, the bitter cold doesn’t seem so bad anymore.
And then there’s Christmas and family, the best duo. Winter never fails to be the season where families and friends all feel a little closer. Whether it’s arguing with your siblings over what movie to watch for the hundredth time, sitting around the table eating way too much dessert (don’t tell the winter athletes coaches. Shh..), or staying up way too late since schools are out for a couple weeks. There is truly nothing more magical. It’s the season of traditions that never seem to get old. It’s not even about the gifts, its about everything surrounding them. Between the wrapping, the guessing, the laughter and joy, and the family chaos that is in its own odd way, comforting; there is truly nothing better.
This is not to discredit any other season, trust me they all have their perks. But winter teaches us to slow down, stay close, and to find joy in the small, cozy moments. So, as the season settles in, maybe, let this be a reminder to hold room for extra patience and gentleness with not only ourselves but everyone around us.
