The Winter Olympics recently finished in Italy. With the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles about to go on sale to the general public, it’s a good time to compare the two events. The Winter Olympics is better than the Summer Olympics because you get to see way more unknown events and games that you don’t usually see on TV.
In the Winter Olympics there are so many different events like Bobsleigh (bobsled), Biathlon, curling, and many other skiing events.
The Bobsled event is where a team of four rides down a steep track with a bunch of turns. During these turns the leader in the sled steers and leans with the rest of the team to find the perfect line down the hill. The team with the fastest time wins. This year the U.S.A. won the women’s Monobob which is where one person is in the sled instead of four or two.
The Biathlon is probably the most unique event in the Olympics. It consists of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. The athletes have to ski down a cross-country track and stop at shooting points where they have to shoot 5 tiny targets about 50 meters away and if they miss the target they get added time to their end time or they have to do a penalty lap. The difficulty with this event is the athletes have to push hard and fast while they are skiing but when they reach a shooting spot they have to slow their heart rate and breathing to maintain consistency through the 5 targets.
Finally, Curling is a very unique sport that involves angles and speed. The idea is to get your team’s stones closest to the center. Each team gets 8 stones a round and after all 16 stones are thrown points are awarded. A team gets a point for each stone closer to the center than their opponent’s closest stone. The match lasts ten rounds and the team with the most points wins.
I would encourage everyone to watch the Olympics and cheer on your country as well.
