Legacy tragedy makes impact at West, too

An unfortunate event occurred this past weekend with the Legacy High School Football team as their team bus got in an accident and killed the bus driver and injured 17 others. They were just leaving DIA as they had just gotten home from a game in California before the accident. Tons of players and coaches had serious injuries and some were in critical condition.

I can only imagine what everyone affected by this accident is going through and how they are feeling. As an athlete here at Greeley West, I send my condolences and prayers out to everyone affected. I hope everyone comes together and realizes that life could change at any given moment and that is why they should treasure every moment they have with each other.

My uncle is Jim Martinez and he is our wrestling coach here at Greeley West.  Some people don’t know this, but he also got his license to be our bus driver to matches and tournaments. This is a very serious event to not only him but all drivers. He said, “Kids should be more serious about putting their seatbelt on, and walking up and down the aisles. It also makes us drivers a lot more aware of situations and things should be taken a lot more seriously. I am glad we have great trainers here.”

“I hope everything gets better for everyone affected,” Martinez added.

If something like this happened to my uncle or to my team it would hurt me a lot.  It would hurt our school a lot.  That’s why we support our conference rival Legacy today.

This situation not only makes others take bus rides seriously but it will make myself as a captain, and leader on the team to set an example for others. Even though we don’t know the cause of the wreck yet, there are things we can do to prevent incidents like this at Greeley West.  I will make sure my teammates and everyone on the bus is serious.  I do not ever want a situation like this to happen to anyone else.
