Today, Greeley West honored winter sports and accomplishments at a morning pep assembly that consisted of music, performances, games, class chants, and a beautifully executed pie-in-the face.
The assembly started off with the National Anthem sung by the Pegasus choir, followed by an enthusiastic performance by the Greeley West Cheer Team.
Another very entertaining performance was presented by the Ballet Folklorico club with a special appearance made by foreign language teacher Naomy Lopez who runs the club alongside foreign language teacher Annette Quintana. “I was very entertained by all of the dance performances,” said girls basketball captain Maria Tapia Valeria.
The first game played, that got the whole student body participating, was a crowd surfing competition between the freshman/seniors and sophomores/juniors, using a flimsy cardboard cutout of a swimmer. After about one intense minute of yelling and throwing, the freshman and senior team took the win.

After the recognition of the girls and unified basketball teams, a three point contest took place, revealing the real athletic skills, or lack thereof, of assistant principal Kyle Appelhans.
The crowd favorite was, without a doubt, the leg wrestling competitions. Some were flipped in the matter of seconds, while others put up a fight against their opponent. The game ended strong with a victory from social studies teacher Nicholas Jakoby.
“This was one of the better assemblies, partly because the games were much more engaging,” stated senior Marcos Flores-Doman.
Following the game that exposed the strength of some of Greeley Wests’ student athletes and teachers, the Poms Team came out on the floor to show us their power in athleticism and entertainment, with a routine that won them first place at League.
The moment many students had been waiting for quickly approached when NHS officers Michael McCoy and Sophie Dhupar announced the reward for the senior class, who collected over 200 coats for the NHS winter coat drive. Only seconds later, Principal Mr. Jeff Cranson was seen walking across the gymnasium covered in whipped cream. Sophomore Hayden Atchley mentioned, “My favorite part of the whole thing was watching Cranson get pied in the face.”
The assembly came to a close with the school fight song, played by the band, who also performed the hit song “Hot To Go” earlier in the morning. The class chants followed their performance, which, to many people’s surprise, brought juniors to victory.
