February is designated as Black History Month and the Greeley West Student Council is again celebrating the month-long event. West Word is partnering with STUCO to create a series spotlighting students from each grade level sharing West students’ stories.
Freshmen start a new chapter in their lives and so our series starts with them.
Anthony Wilson is a freshman who has been kind throughout his first year here. People who are around him would call him, “caring, kind, and joyful,” Wilson stated.
Wilson is involved in Unified Basketball. He participates in this because, “I like it a lot and it’s fun.”
Something he would want to tell his younger self is “you got this,” Wilson said.
Enon Atassoko is a student in AP Human Geography and traces his family history back to Benin. He still celebrates his culture at home, typically by wearing traditional clothes for events like birthdays and holidays. “I’m basic – just a normal person, ” Atassoko said.
Atassoko said his role model is Kylian Mbappe, so it should surpise noone he plays soccer at Greeley West. As he thought about his younger self, he would have said, “Have fun and be goofy.”
Joy Uwase is a student who people would describe as quiet but also someone who’s culture means a lot to them. “Our traditions are special, we like to teach other people our language, along with other traditions ,” Uwase stated.
Someone who Uwase looks up to is “my mom because she’s kind, caring and unselfish.”

Yvenson Sainvilus is someone who has found joy in “playing soccer with my friends outside,” and also something others would describe him doing and enjoying.
Someone who Sainvilus is always around is his mom and, “I feel like I can look up to her because she’s always there for me.”
One of the lessons that Sainvilus has learned in his life is that “You do some things, and they may not be the best, but you learn from them.” As a result, that’s something he would like to go back and tell himself as a kid.
We’ll explore more about our students throughout February, so stay tuned for this series and partnership with Greeley West Student Council.
