Mexican American Studies Societey (MASS) is an academic organization that focuses on the history, Chicano/Mexican culture, identity, and contributions of Mexican Americans and other Latinx communities in the United States.
Mexican American Studies is more than just another history class or club. It’s a way for students of Mexican heritage to feel seen, heard, and understood.
At Greeley West High School, the Mexican American Studies Society gives students the chance to connect with their own culture and learn about the struggles and accomplishments of people who share their heritage.
Club sponsor Ms. Izbeth Pacheco said, “The purpose of the organization is to help kids find their voice and use that to better represent their community and their culture within the school and community.”
Sometimes they go out into the community and work with community organizations like Alfe del Rucha, which is an organization that focuses on helping youth, learn about problems in their community and ways to give back.
Tomorrow, the kids will be volunteering at a children’s festival, where they will be giving out books on the north side of Greeley, where there’s like a literacy problem.
MASS spends a chunk of its time doing activities around the school. “We participate in Trick or Treat Street, the Car Caravan and things like that,” Pacheco said. “But we also participate at the celebration of Dia De Los Muertos at UNC.”
If you’re interested in joining the club, you can find Pacheco in Room A-104.
