At Greeley West high school, many labs and field studies take place especially in the college courses world. The past couple of weeks, the UNC Environmental science class have been working all around to learn more about soil and water.
This group of students got to go out behind Greeley West to the lake at Greeley West Park and tested the clearance of the water which is how safe the water is to drink and swim in. Alongside that, they also took shovels and worked in the dirt to test its
This has been a very fun and informative study for many. Junior Isaiah Parker said, “For me, I enjoy learning about our environment on its own, so, these field studies, specifically the water one, was a creative way to combine fun with friends alongside furthering my knowledge of this already intriguing subject.”
Junior Logan Mcgonigal agreed. “This study was so much fun, being able to get into the water and have some fun with my friends while collecting data but also getting to learn more about the environment we all live in was super cool, especially with it being at a lake so close to where we are on a daily basis,” Mcgonigal said.
Ms. Corrine Loulies, the UNC Environmental Science teacher, thinks this was a great opportunity to apply classroom studies to the real world. “Every new development requires an Environmental Impact Report to be written by an environmental scientist. Our students are completing the same report that real scientists use to guide how to mitigate impacts to the environment,” Loulies explained. “Our solutions and suggestions will be sent to the City of Greeley for evaluation.”
She went on to say, “I hope the students take away from this that environmental science matters and it’s fun to get dirty and learn all about the importance of nature’s cleaning systems.”
