Today, students and teachers at Greeley West High School have struggled with unreliable Wi-Fi, especially on personal devices. The issue has made it difficult for many to complete assignments, access resources, and stay focused in class.
Mr. Joel Suarez, who teaches AP & IB Computer Science, Computer Programming, Web Design, Physics, and AVID, said he hears about Wi-Fi problems from his students almost every day. “I consistently hear from my students, especially on their personal devices, that the Wi-Fi doesn’t work,” he explained. “Even on school-provided devices, sometimes the computers won’t connect to the network, and then kids can’t even scan their QR code.”
Recently, the school also experienced a problem with the public Wi-Fi certificate expiring, which forced students to “forget” the network and reconnect. “It just adds way too much work,” Suarez said. We report it to IT and administration, but once we do, it’s kind of the ball in their court.”
Students have been feeling the impact as well. Senior Fernando Garcia said the Wi-Fi issues have made it harder to complete school work. “Most of my assignments and notes are on the computer,” Garcia said. “It’s hard to adapt, you have to ask teachers to print things out, and it takes time from both them and you.”
Garcia added that the issue has affected his motivation. “I feel less motivated because typing on the computer is quicker. Writing everything out just slows things down,” he said.
For a school that relies on technology across nearly every subject, reliable internet access is essential. As Suarez pointed out, “We need to have free access to the internet so we can get the information we need for assignments and projects.”
Until the Wi’Fi problems are fixed, both teachers and students will have to find ways to work around it.
