On Monday, Greeley West took to the District Board, a prime candidate for the new Athletic Director position. This was an individual who the committee had thought was a perfect fit for the West culture.
As of next year, Mr. Jacob Perez, will be working at the school as the new AD. As for background, Perez is currently working at Winograd as a Dean of Students but also has experience as an English teacher and coach.
As for the individuals in the committee, hopes are high for this new shift. Many head coaches throughout West, including but limited to Mr. Jorge Cabral and Mr. Jacob Vargas are enthusiastic about how Perez can positively influence the culture and shift the narrative on the school’s athletics.
Vargas, the head football coach, is excited to watch Perez grow the programs as he is, “very disciplined and people-centered, offering tremendous amounts of improvement and success” to not only the football program but also all other programs.
Cabral, the soccer coach, agreed. “Perez’s drive is what stands out to me the most, he is so passionate about what he is doing and as an Athletic Director, the highs can be super high but the lows are also extremely low and I believe Perez can handle these.” Cabral stated.
He went on to talk about more that Perez brings to the table, “I believe he will hype up the Greeley West culture and really build on it, with him being young, he will be able to bring those new ideas into our programs and school and we really need that.”
Vargas went on to say, “However, Rome wasn’t built in one day, are the athletic programs at West making progress? Are the kids having a positive experience? Are we bringing in coaches that are creating that positive experience? These are the questions that should be asked when measuring success within the near future,” he said.
