Greeley West senior Aileen Mendiola has been selected as one of the only four students in Weld County to receive the 2025 Traditional Scholarship from the Hispanic Women of Weld County. The one-time $750 award, which can be used towards tuition, books, or college fees, recognizes outstanding students who show academic dedication, leadership, and commitment to their future goals.
For Mendiola, earning this scholarship was both an honor and a moment of hope. “Winning the scholarship to me means a way to give back to my community,” she shared. “I’m going to use it to become a doctor and just go into college after high school. It feels like hope for my future.”
The application process, however, wasn’t easy. Mendiola explained that the hardest part was simply getting started. “It’s always daunting knowing where to start with applications and trying to find the resources to help you out,” she said. “We had recommendations for five different essays. Finding topics meaningful enough to write passionately about was the hardest part.”
Mendiola’s strong involvement at school has shaped her into the focused, driven student she is today. Whether through academics or extracurriculars, she has always aimed to make the most of every opportunity. “Staying involved has made me more focused on my academics and interested in having a future where I actually make a difference,” she said.
After graduation, Mendiola plans to attend an out of state college and later enroll in medical school to become a surgeon, a difficult path she’s determined to achieve.
Her advice to other students seeking scholarships is simple, just apply. “You never know if you’re going to win or not,” she said. “There are so many opportunities out there.”
Mendiola’s dedication, perseverance, and passion for her future career makes her an outstanding student example across Weld County.
