February at Greeley West High School is more than just another month. This year, our student body has taken it upon themselves to fill the hallways and make sure Black history is not only remembered but also celebrated.
Student Council members have taken the lead in organizing activities that highlight the achievements and cultural impact of African Americans throughout history. This act of celebration starts the very moment students walk through the doors each morning.
Senior Student Council member Nadia Adam shared the biggest ways STUCO promotes Black History Month. “We are playing music in the morning as students are arriving, and in the announcements we are stating facts about the artist that is playing,” Adam said.
Most students already listen to these artists with little to no education on them, with this, it creates a connection to the students as they learn about the artists’ legacy. Adam’ shared this act of inclusion’s goal “is to spread and make it known that anyone can celebrate this month.” This is an opportunity for the entire school to learn and appreciate the influence of Black leaders.
Junior Student Council member Marcos Rodriguez highlighted another piece of how Greeley West celebrates this month. “In our four core hallways we have the windows filled with Black role models to educate others on the impact African Americans had on history, English, math, and science,” Rodriguez said. As students walk through the academic wings, they can see influential figures who shaped Black excellence in history.
Teachers have also noticed the acts around the school. Science teacher Mr. Ryan Pace praised the students’ involvement. “It is amazing to be at a school where students push diversity and want to celebrate amazing things in our society, and I feel very lucky and blessed the students are willing to do it,” he said.
Through music, education, and student advocacy, Greeley West’s STUCO has done an amazing job spreading facts on Black leaders. As February continues, the message will stay the same while students celebrate diverse stories that shape our world.
