Students returning to Greeley West next year had to pick their schedules for next year during these past two weeks. Elective courses got their own couple of days dedicated towards them so that teachers could promote their classes, and students could learn more about them. 

Administrators allowed teachers to dedicate responsive scheduling to try and recruit students to join their elective classes for next year. In past years, there have been elective fairs, an informative time during lunch, during a late start, and last year, teachers made short videos to tell students about what it would be like to take their class. 

There are some things that interfere with student’s wanting to take certain classes, so it’s up to the heads of each department to voice their opinions about what they think would be the most effective way to get their messages across to the students. It’s been trial and error for many years, on which strategy is the most effective. It has been a struggle to encourage students to care about what classes they choose for next year. 

Assistant principal Amanda Jones-Weis stated, “You’re not going to register for a class if you don’t know about it.” 

It is crucial for students to pick their classes each semester, especially to elective teachers whose classes can’t be continued if they don’t have enough students to sign up. The same classes have been on the schedule for years, but making each schedule is dependent on student participation. 

Elective teacher Ky Dietz stated, “The idea of getting a big group of students to present to, and spread the information to is a good idea, but the big hiccup is if the kids are really focused on it, or if they’re just there to be there.”
